Passes vs developer products vs subscriptions vs private servers
The four products side by side
| Product | What it is | Where the price is set | Price limits | Refunds and ownership |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game pass | One-time Robux purchase that unlocks a privilege in your experience. You must grant the privilege yourself in a script. | Not stated on the Passes docs page. | No general limit stated. Promoted passes that are on sale must cost more than 49 and less than 801 Robux. | Refunds: not stated. Roblox does not track who bought a pass, so you assign privileges and can check ownership with UserOwnsGamePassAsync. |
| Developer product | An item or ability a player can buy more than once, such as in-game currency or potions. You process each purchase with ProcessReceipt. | In Creator Hub when you create the product ("Set the product price in Robux"). | Minimum 1 Robux, maximum 1,000,000,000 Robux. | Refunds: not stated. Roblox does not keep per-user purchase history for products; storing it is your job. |
| Subscription | Auto-renewing monthly benefits, not a one-time purchase. Benefits last while the user keeps paying. | In the Creator Dashboard when you create it: Robux (custom amount) or local currency (one of 5 tiers). | Robux: 49 or more. Local currency tiers: $2.99, $4.99, $7.99, $9.99, $14.99. A Robux price can change once every 60 days. | Subscriptions bought with Robux are not eligible for refunds. Users who cancel get none automatically and must request one, handled case by case. Several subscriptions in one game can be owned at once; mutually exclusive tiers are not supported. |
| Private server | A monthly Robux fee that lets a player decide who plays with them. The 10-K counts it as a subscription-based offering. | Creator Dashboard, your experience, Audience, Access Settings: turn on Allow private servers, enable Requires Robux and enter the price. The experience must be public. | Price limits: not stated. It cannot be combined with paid access. | Refunds and ownership: not stated. Changing the price cancels all active private server subscriptions, and players get a message in their inbox. |
Where a cell says "not stated", the Creator Docs page is silent and the gap is left open on purpose rather than filled from memory. According to the docs, cross-experience pass and product sales are disabled from May 30, 2026.
Worked example: a 100 Robux pass
| Sale price | 100 Robux |
| Your share (70%) | 70 Earned Robux |
| At the standard rate $0.0038 | $0.266 |
| If the qualifying rate $0.0054 applies | $0.378 |
70 = 100 x 0.7; $0.266 = 70 x 0.0038; $0.378 = 70 x 0.0054. The qualifying rate applies only to purchases by US players verified 18+ in eligible games. Cash-out needs the 30,000 Earned Robux minimum and fees apply; see the DevEx requirements guide. Not tax or legal advice.
Questions
How much of a sale do I keep?
Roblox's Creator Docs say it directly: "Monetize your games" says you earn 70% of the Robux spent when you sell your own passes in your game, and "How do I make money?" says you receive 70% on passes and developer products, the other 30% being Roblox's Marketplace Fee. The Private servers page gives no share; the only 70% figure is in the Roblox Plus private server payout example. The Subscriptions page says 70% for Robux subscriptions (500 Robux nets 350), and for local-currency ones 70% in month one, then 100%, after platform fees. Roblox's 10-K gives the same 70% for creators selling their own creations in their experiences.
Is it the same commission as avatar items?
No. The Marketplace fees page covers avatar items, limiteds and resale only, and says nothing on passes, products, subscriptions or private servers. Do not apply those percentages to experience sales.
Which one should I use?
Roblox's own split: a developer product is for things a player can buy again, a pass for something bought once. A subscription is for benefits that need continued payment. That is the docs' guidance, not a revenue ranking, and none of the pages compares earnings.
